Each of these is a filter and a sort applied to the catalogue, and each one states what it sorted on. There is no editorial pick and no test lab behind them — where a guide says a printer is first, the basis for that is printed at the top of the page so you can disagree with it.
Most build volume per dollar
Build volume is quoted as three numbers that are impossible to compare by eye. Converting to litres and dividing by price gives one figure that answers whether the bigger machine is actually better value — and the spread is wider than most people expect.

Highest published flow rate
Print speed is capped by how much plastic the hotend can melt per second, not by how fast the gantry can move. Most makers publish only the second number. These are the machines that publish the first, ordered by it.

Every printer in this price bracket advertises a speed in the hundreds of millimetres per second. Only some publish the flow rate that would make that speed achievable. These are those, under $600.

Best first 3D printer
Two things sink a first printer: assembling it wrong, and never getting a first layer to stick. Machines that arrive built and find the bed themselves remove both. This list is the ones that do that under $400, cheapest first.

Enclosed printers for ABS and ASA
An enclosure that merely traps heat is not the same as one that drives it. ABS and ASA stop curling off the plate at around 60 °C of chamber air, which only an actively heated chamber reaches reliably. Heated chambers first, then passive enclosures.

Multi-material printers at their true price
Multi-material printers are photographed with the changer attached and priced without it. This list orders them by the total: the printer plus the unit that makes it do the thing it is advertised doing. Where the changer is built in, that total is the sticker price.

Resin printers by XY resolution
A 16K panel stretched over a wide plate can have a coarser pixel than a 9K panel over a narrow one. The number that decides what you can see is the plate width divided by the pixels across it, in microns. Finest first.

Printers that run without the cloud
Firmware policy became a buying criterion in 2025, when changes to how printers authorise commands made owners ask what happens to a machine if the vendor's service changes or stops. These printers can be driven on a local network without a cloud account.

Largest build volume
Past a certain size the question stops being how fast a printer is and becomes whether the part fits at all. Ranked by litres, largest first, with the caveat that a very large moving bed is slower in practice than its speed rating suggests.
